Couples Counseling

How Couples Counseling Works

The goal of therapy is to give couples problem-solving tools. Studies show that most new couples expect to agree with their spouse/partner far more often than they actually will.

We were really never taught how to be in a relationship or deal with the conflicts that come up. And this is where counseling helps. Communication skills are crucial to couples to help them understand each other and become better listeners.

Over the first few sessions, expect the therapist to interview both of you. After that, the therapist should give you feedback and a plan for treatment.

The average length of counseling is 12 sessions, but it can be different for each couple.

After four or five sessions, you should be able to tell if the therapy is working. By this time, you and your partner should feel you're communicating with each other in a more positive and effective manner.

Changes in situations like financial state, physical health, and the influence of other family members can have a profound influence on the behavior, responses and actions of the individuals in a relationship.
